Basic Requirements:
- An internet connection
- A laptop or desktop (not tablet or phone) with a keyboard and mouse
- A working microphone and speakers - we recommend headphones or a headset with an integrated microphone (which you've tested). If you don't have either, please ensure your child is in a quiet place for the benefit of the class.
- Chrome web browser - if something doesn't work on Chrome, try Firefox or Edge. Please don't use Safari!
- Optional: Webcam - Either external or built-in (many laptops have an integrated camera).
- For Minecraft classes: Minecraft Java Edition (installation instructions here)
Detailed System Requirements:
- Broadband internet connection (ideally with at least 1.2Mbps download and 600Kbps upload speeds)
- For Coding Classes: 4GB of RAM or more (<4GB RAM may work but may be unstable in some situations)
- For Minecraft and Idea Incubator classes and camps, and Mini Makers daily programs and camps ONLY:
- Minecraft system requirements (source)
- CPU: Intel Core i3-3210 3.2 GHz / AMD A8-7600 APU 3.1 GHz or equivalent (older or less powerful CPUs may work but may be unstable in some situations)
- RAM: 4GB or more (<4GB RAM may work but may be unstable in some situations)
- Minecraft: PC (Windows 7 or later) or Mac (OSX 10.7 or later) computer (not a Chromebook)
Connecting to class:
- Get the latest stable version of Chrome Web Browser (to ensure compatability with our different programs)
- Optional: we recommend installing the free ad blocker uBlock Origin from the Chrome Web Store. It will appear as a button on the top left corner of your browser.
- Please close all unnecessary programs, windows and tabs before joining our virtual classroom (and avoid large downloads/streaming during class), in order to have the highest internet speed possible for your child.
- Find the virtual class link in your email, and click on it!
- Enter only your child’s first name, and select “Continue”. You won't need to make or sign in to an account.
- Whereby.com will then request access to your mic and webcam. Follow the onscreen instructions, and allow access to both. You can choose to turn your webcam off after allowing access, but we recommend leaving it on - it’s a great way to connect with your mentor!
- Check to see if your mic, headphones, and camera are working properly. When you're ready to join, click "Knock". This will notify the mentor that you are waiting, and will put you in the waiting room. While waiting, you should see the message “Waiting for reply…”. Unless someone tells you to, please don't refresh the page!
During class:
- If you need help, click the ‘Chat’ button at the bottom of the screen, and click on the raised hand. You can also use the chat to type a message to your mentor. They may send you a link from time to time - use this button to access it!
- There's also a ‘Share’ button at the bottom - this lets you share your screen with the class! Hover over it and click "Share Screen". Your browser will ask for which screen you want to share - click "Entire Screen". While you're sharing, this button will be red. If you don't see a grey pop-up after clicking share, please follow our guide here.
- If multiple makers are sharing their screens, and you would like to make the mentor's screen bigger, click the three dots at the top right corner of the screenshare window, then click "Maximize".
- During the class, be nearby to help your child resolve technical issues if they lose contact with their mentor.
